Secure Your Trip with ixigo Alternate Travel Plan (Formerly Travel Guarantee)

Previous topic - Next topic
Quoteixigo Alternate Travel Plan (previously known as Travel Guarantee) is a financial protection service for waitlisted train passengers. It does not force the Indian Railways to confirm your specific seat. Instead, if your ticket remains fully Waitlisted after chart preparation, the plan provides a refund of up to 3X the ticket value (1X as original payment refund + up to 2X as a Travel Voucher). You use this payout to book a confirmed Flight or Bus immediately.

The price gap between a failed train ticket (approx. ₹1,500) and a last-minute flight (approx. ₹5,000) is the biggest risk in Indian travel. If your train ticket stays waitlisted, the standard IRCTC refund covers only the base fare, leaving you stranded or forced to pay surge pricing for alternatives.

The Alternate Travel Plan acts as specific Gap Insurance. By paying a small non-refundable premium (e.g., ₹99 to ₹300), you lock in a potential payout that bridges this cost difference. It effectively converts your high-risk waitlisted train ticket into a secured voucher for a flight or luxury bus, ensuring you reach your destination regardless of the railway chart status.

What You Need Before Starting
Checklist
  • ixigo Trains App: This feature is deeply integrated into their mobile ecosystem and is often unavailable on the desktop website.
  • A Waitlisted Train: The option only appears for tickets with uncertain waitlists (GNWL, RLWL). It is often disabled for Available or RAC tickets.
  • Immediate Liquidity: You must pay the full ticket price plus the Alternate Travel Plan fee upfront.
  • Hidden Requirement (Passenger Name Match): The voucher you receive is non-transferable. You must use it to book travel for the same passengers listed on the original failed train ticket.

How It Works & Hidden Details
The Alternate Travel Plan operates on a strict actuarial model. The refund amount depends entirely on the alternative mode of transport you choose to book.

The Refund Breakdown (The 1X + 2X Rule):
When a ticket fails (Chart Prepared -> Still WL), ixigo executes two separate transactions:
  • 1X Refund (Cash): The base fare of the train ticket is refunded to your original payment source (Bank/UPI). This is the standard IRCTC refund.
  • 2X Voucher (For Flights/Bus): If you choose to book a Flight or Bus, you get a voucher worth up to 2X the train fare. Total value = 3X.
  • 1X Voucher (For Train): If you choose to book another Train, you typically only get a voucher worth 1X the fare. Total value = 2X.

The Distance Restriction (The 300km Rule):
You cannot use the voucher to fly anywhere. The new flight or bus booking must be for a route where the source and destination are within 300 km of your original train stations. You cannot book a failed Delhi-Mumbai train ticket and use the voucher to fly Delhi-Bangalore.

The 7-Day Clock:
The Voucher is extremely time-sensitive. It expires 7 days from the date of chart preparation. You strictly must use it to book an immediate alternative for the trip you just lost.

Things to Watch Out For
  • The RAC Trap: This is the most critical failure point. If your Waitlisted ticket moves to RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) status at chart preparation, ixigo considers the trip Successful. You get a seat (even if it is half a seat), and you are not eligible for the Alternate Travel Plan refund. You get zero benefits from the extra fee you paid.
  • Manual Cancellation Void: If you get nervous and cancel the ticket yourself 6 hours before the train, you void the plan. You must let the system auto-cancel the ticket after chart preparation to trigger the payouts.
  • Partial Confirmation: If you book for 3 people, and 1 confirms while 2 remain WL, the system often treats the PNR as valid. The 2 waitlisted passengers might not trigger the full 3X payout depending on the specific T&C version active at booking.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I use the voucher to book a flight for my friend?
A: No. The voucher is locked to the user account and restricted to the passenger names listed on the original train ticket to prevent fraud.

Q: What if the flight cost is less than the voucher amount?
A: The remaining balance usually lapses. If you have a ₹5,000 voucher and book a ₹4,000 flight, the remaining ₹1,000 is typically forfeited, not carried forward.

Q: Does this work for Tatkal tickets?
A: Generally, no. Alternate Travel Plan is disabled for Tatkal bookings because the cancellation rules for Tatkal are different, and the risk profile is too high for the insurer.
